Basic Techniques
Using Drag and Drop
Vine makes extensive use of the drag-and-drop technique. You can use it when creating connections between objects, when adding an object to a folder, when placing an object on The Calendar or adding an object to a map and so on. You can even drag and drop multiple Vine objects.
To drag and drop an object:
Click the object to select it. In lists, you can select multiple objects using the SHIFT and CTRL keys. For more information about working with lists, please refer to the Lists of Objects section in the Using Vine chapter.
Drag the object to the location where you want to place it. Note that the cursor can take one of the following two shapes:
Over places where you can drop the object
Over places where you cannot drop the object
Using Shortcut Menus
In Vine desktop client for Windows:
In Vine Web:
The most efficient way to execute a common operation on a chosen object is to use a shortcut menu. You can invoke it by clicking the right mouse button, then choosing the necessary menu item.
Note that the shortcut menu is context sensitive and it includes only the commands currently applicable to the object which you have right-clicked.
Using Toolbars
The Top Toolbar combines the most commonly used commands.
In Vine desktop client for Windows:
In Vine Web:
Click the toolbar button to execute a particular operation. Each button’s operation is made clear by an intuitive icon and a tooltip which appears when you hold the mouse cursor over the button.
Most of the Left Toolbar buttons activate when you hover the mouse cursor over them. The left toolbar includes commands to create new objects, open roles and role tools.
Using Links
Each Vine Web window, shown by the browser, contains a number of links. You can customize how they look by using your browser settings.
Object links work differently from other links:
Click an object link to select the object.
Double-click an object link to open the object.
Right-click an object link to open the shortcut menu containing operations available for that object.
All other links work on single click, for example:
If you click the Advanced Find link, the Advanced Find page will open.
If you click an email link, your e-mail application will be started with the e-mail address loaded.
If you click a web link, the browser will try to open the Web site.
Using Keyboard Shortcuts
Almost all menu and toolbar commands have corresponding keyboard shortcuts. Some shortcuts are shown next to menu names and some are displayed in the Toolbar hints. For a full list of shortcuts see Vine Keyboard Shortcuts in the Appendix.
