Company Fields
Name
The company name should be used to store the full official name of the company. It is a mandatory field.
For example: "ACME, Inc"
Site
The site may be needed when the company has several offices.
For example: "E Washington"
Use Name
A company is referred to by its use name almost everywhere in Vine, except where the full information about the company is shown, e.g. in the main Company view or in the Company pane of a person.
The Find by Name tool searches for companies by their use names.
When you create a new company, Vine automatically creates its Use name from the Name field by omitting all abbreviations such as Ltd., Inc., etc. However you can change the use name yourself. It may be needed if for example you want to add the site to the use name.
For example: "ACME/E Washington"
Once a name of the company has been entered, Vine checks whether a company with a similar use name already exists in the database.
For example, if you entered “acme”, Vine will show the list of all companies with use names starting with “acme”:
If the list already includes the company you want to create, double-click that company or click it and then click Choose. The current edit form will be closed and the edit form of this existing company will be opened.
If you want to create a new company, click New.
If you do not want to continue creating a new or editing some existing company, click Cancel. This dialog and the edit form will be closed. The company will not be saved.
If you have access to the Address Service (and working online) then Vine will automatically check if there are similar companies in the Address Service. And the Find from Address Service button will be enabled if similar companies found so that you can check separately from the Address Service.
Use name is a mandatory field.
Phone
You can find a company by its phone number using the Find by Name tool.
Email addresses are shown as links. When you click an email link, your email application will be opened and you will be able to send an email to the address you clicked.
Web Page
Web page addresses are shown as links. You can click any web link and it will be opened in your web browser.
Address Fields
Use the address fields to enter the location of the company.
The street address fields are important to fill in as, for example, they are required for the Google Maps to work.
If you enter the post address fields, it will help in automatic generation of mailing labels.
Country
This is a mandatory field. You have to select the company country from the list. Choose Other if you do not see the needed country in the short list.
Description
Use this filed for a free-form description of the company. A standard description field can store up to 2000 characters.
Id
This is the unique database identification number of the company. Even if you create two companies with exactly the same names and data they will still have different IDs.
An object receives its ID when it is stored in the server database. If you are working offline then you may notice that all new companies you create have negative IDs. Those are temporary IDs and they will be substituted with the proper ones as soon as you connect to the server database.
An object's ID cannot be altered.
Cr./Ch.
Cr./Ch. fields store information about when and by whom the object was first created (Cr.) and last changed. These are read-only fields and you cannot change their values.
Access Rights
For information about object access rights please see the Protecting Objects chapter.
